Flóki Sheep Dung Smoked Reserve – Eimverk Distillery – Reykjavik, Iceland

I always enjoy a good whiskey, and am always up for trying new strange things, so when I saw this Eimverk, Iceland's first whiskey distillery, I was intrigued. This is a whiskey smoked much like the peat smoked whiskeys of Scotland but with a more Icelandic fuel for smoking, sheep dung, and I have to say it’s quite interesting. So, starting with the aroma, the most noticeable thing you get, besides alcohol, is grass. Frankly this isn’t too surprising considering the smoking fuel, but along with it you also get a noticeable note of leather. Things change up though once you move to the taste as you start to get more smokey flavours straight away. Along with that though you get some very light hints of chocolate and this slight hint of metal on the back end. This moves of course into the finish with is quite long and of course dry. As for food pairings, I actually had this with some pate on toast and it worked very well. I can also see this going nicely with things like pulled pork, many different fishes and even dark chocolate. All in all this was a unique whiskey that I certainly enjoyed, but I must admit I think it needs a bit more time to mellow. But if you are in Iceland and have the chance to give this a go, I’d certainly suggest you don’t pass up the opportunity.
