Ah coffee and beer, two wonderful things in life that can clearly only be made better by combining them. Which, to be honest, I actually haven’t had many coffee beers in the past, I can only think of one other at the moment, so when I got this coffee IPA at Ægisgarður I was very intrigued. Right off the bat, when you get a good smell of this beer, you’re hit with hops as this is of course an IPA. Besides that though you also get this lovely hint of coffee, it’s not in your face, but certainly noticeable. So, when you take your first sip it should really be no surprise that the two dominant flavours you get are Hops and Coffee. For me the Coffee came through far more this time and found a nice balance with the hops, and with the combination of the two you get a slight bitterness to it all. This bitterness carries you into the finish, which for me was quite nice though it didn’t linger for as long as I would have liked. Now as for food, sadly I didn’t have this beer with anything but with it being coffee forward I can see this going with a lot. Basic rule I’d say is that anything you’d eat with your coffee would probably go well here too, so enjoy it with some sweet pie, cookies and perhaps even eggs and bacon. This was a very unique and delicious beer, and one of the best I had on my trip to Iceland, so if you have the chance to try it yourself I would say to give it a go.
