I always love trying weird, experimental beers, but I always seem to return to a nice, hoppy pale ale as my sort of go to beer. So, when I was exploring Icelandic brews on my recent trip I was pleased to see so many good ones, and one of my favourites was this particular pale ale from Bryggjan Brugghús. Starting with the smell, as we tend to do, you're hit pretty quickly with a lot of hops and some malt. You also get some nice citrus notes that help balance all that out. Once you take a sip the first thing you find, once again, are those hops, as they do love sticking around. But just like in the aroma, you get a nice citrusy balance though this time it comes through more clearly as orange peel to me and also has a slight hint of minerality. As for the finish, it certainly isn’t long, but it lingers well enough and is noticeably smooth, making it an easy drinker. Now moving onto the food, I personally had this with some smokes salmon and it was delicious, but I can easily see this going with shrimp, turkey and of course a good burger. Overall this was a pretty great beer, and one of the better ones I had during my trip in Iceland, the only downside is that you can’t get it here stateside. But hey, if you find yourself in Iceland I’d say to give this one a try.
