Araba-Bara-Rabbabara – Ölverk Pizza & Brewery – Hveragerði, Iceland

I always love a good sour beer, especially when it uses some atypical ingredients to try and make something new and interesting. This ginger and rhubarb sour from Ölverk certainly fits that idea so I was more than happy to give it a go. So once you get your nose in the glass for a good whiff, you immediately get a very prominent smell of ginger. Besides this you also get a hint of malt, but admittedly that ginger masks a lot of it. Then once you take a sip you are brought right back to that ginger, but this time it’s not so dominant in the flavour. It gets nicely balanced out by the taste of rhubarb as well as a very slight malty sweetness. As for the finish on this beer, it doesn't linger for very long but it does leave you with that nice tanginess you get with sours. Now I personally had this sour with a nice pepperoni and mushroom pizza and it went perfectly. I think it would go equally as well though with things like mussels, steak or even chili. This was one of the more interesting beers I had in Iceland, especially with the rhubarb, and overall is a pretty versatile beer. So if you find yourself in the country I’d say to give this one a try if you can.

TLDR Notes:

Smell - Ginger, Malt Taste - Ginger, Rhubarb, Malt

Finish - Short, Tangy Cost - 1.000 kr on tap If you’d like to know more you can check out their site here: Ölverk Pizza & Brewery
