2008 Merlot – Veritas Vineyard & Winery – Afton, VA

This is an old review I wrote for another site

Ah poor merlot, it has taken such a beating in recent years and honestly I don’t know why. It’s an absolutely wonderful varietal and one which I am quite fond of, and this merlot from Veritas definitely doesn’t disappoint. As always the fun starts in the great aromas of this beautiful ruby red wine. You instantly notice some lovely dark fruit and berry smells, most notably cherries. But you also get some hints of other berries, possibly raspberry, as well as a soft hint of herbs. After you’re ready to take your nose out of the glass and take a sip you are once again thrown in with those fruits and berries from before, especially the cherry. But this time you also get a nice earthy quality to the wine with those herbs coming through once more. I also think I got a little bit of chocolate to this wine, subtle though if it is truly there. As for food pairings, I had this with a nice grilled steak and a baked potato and it went great. I think this would go equally well with some nice pasta or even a pizza. I think you’ll really enjoy this wine if you are a merlot fan, though I also think Bordeaux lovers will enjoy it too (though it is slightly less tannic then a traditional Bordeaux wine). The price may be pushing it for some, but trust me it is worth the This is an old review I wrote for another site20 if you can find it as it is out of stock at the vineyard and at all the places I know online.
