2007 Merlot – Heritage Vineyards – Mullica Hill, NJ

This is an old review I wrote for another site

Ah good old New Jersey has always been a good state for red wines in my mind. And thankfully this Merlot from Heritage Vineyards certainly didn’t stray from that opinion. When you open up a bottle of this wine and really get your nose into it you’re hit with some pretty amazing aromas right away. The first of these smells being an intense aroma of dark cherry as well as other generic fruits (couldn’t quite pick them out). On top of this you also get this lovely oak and tobacco smell that’s quite mellow and really brings all the aromas together quite nicely. After you take a sip you’re reintroduced once more to those fruits and oak from above, and this time I think I may be picking up a bit of strawberry. Along with this you also get a really nice sort of toasty taste and feel to the finish which I quite enjoyed. And of course a tipping point for my enjoyment was the wonderfully long finish to this wine (I do always love a lingering taste … provided it’s nice of course). Now I had this with a nice meal of steak and mushrooms and it went wonderfully, and I think it could go equally as well with a nice pasta or even a salad pilled with tomatoes (who doesn’t like tomatoes). If you are a fan of Merlot, Chambourcin or any Cabs I think you will enjoy this wine and with the price point where it is I think definitely shouldn’t pass it up.
