2007 Gewurztraminer – Elk Run Vineyards – Mt. Airy, MD

This is an old review I wrote for another site

Maryland has quite a reputation for wine these days and it is very well deserved, especially when they produce wonderful Gewurztraminers like this one. Now generally my favourite Gewurztraminers are of the German variety, but I must say Elk Run Vineyards really does well with this one. When you open up a bottle of this wine you get an idea of what you are in for pretty quickly with these wonderful aromas of spicy citrus fruits. You also get a light floral character to the smell of this wine with maybe a little hint of toast (I’ll be honest that one kinda surprised me). After you are done with the beautiful aroma and more onto that taste you are once again hit by that wonderful spicy citrus aroma, though this time you can more easily pick it out as grapefruit. Besides this you also get the always interesting nutty flavour to this wine that is indicative of a good Gewurztraminer. This wine goes great with so many foods, and with my tasting I had some great Orange Chicken take out, though this goes just as well with baked ham, curry or even a chicken pot pie. I think that if you are a fan of Traminer or Rieslings you will probably enjoy this wine quite a bit, the price point is a bit high for some but this is definitely worth a try.
