2006 Viognier – Westbend Vineyard – Lewisville, NC (Yadkin Valley)

This is an old review I wrote for another site

Another one of the great wines that I had at the Charlotte Airport, which had a lot of the nice points that I tend look for in a viognier. This was another wine that I didn't get a chance to open the bottle myself to get that freshly opened smell which I love but still got a great aroma from the glass of course. The most noticeable smell to me was of flowers, which I believe was most likely honeysuckle (I could be wrong but I do try). Beyond the honeysuckle you also get a slight aroma of what I think is either pear or apple (who would have it be tough to tell the difference). As for the taste of this wine I was first struck by how sweet this wine is; it wasn't bad but it was a bit sweeter than you would expect from a viognier. After I accepted that fact I noticed the great flavours behind the sweetness, the most noticeable being a light citrus taste. This was surpassed though by the really great long finish that tasted vaguely of apples (making me think that smell was more on the apple side). With food I would have to suggest something along the lines of a mildly seasoned grilled fish or shrimp, though I didn't have any food when I tasted this one so this is just speculation. This is a great wine that you should all try especially if you are a fan of viogniers or whites in general. This was a bit sweeter than I like personally in a viognier but I still loved this one and definitely plan on getting another bottle, so give it try (you know you want to).
