2006 Tuscarora Red – Rockbridge Vineyards – Raphine, VA

This is an old review I wrote for another site

This was a fairly interesting wine that I picked up at a local store on a whim, one which I wasn’t expecting a horribly large amount from. Though, I am pleased to say that this wine surpassed my expectations, granted it didn’t shatter them but it did surpass them. When you open up a bottle of this wine you pretty quickly get hit by a decent aroma of berries, maybe even black currant (maybe). You also get a somewhat herbal quality to the smell, now I can’t say what herbs precisely but it just has that quality to it. After you are finished with those dominant smells and move into the taste you really notice how well that berry aroma follows through into the flavour (still thinking black currant maybe). Beyond the berry taste you also get a pretty decent fruitiness to it that thankfully isn’t too intense. Overall this is a really nice and well balanced wine that has a soft finish and good acidity to it that really lends itself to food. I personally had this with some pizza and it worked great, but if you want a more formal meal with it then any red Mediterranean dish would go great with this I think. This is an excellent purchase and one I think you all shouldn’t pass up, especially if you are a fan of wines such as Chambourcin, Cabernet Sauvignon or even a Petit Verdot. So go on and give it a go.
