This is an old review I wrote for another site
Out of all of the Italian varietals, Sangiovese is by far my absolute favourite. So this 100% Sangiovese from Valhalla Vineyards had some pretty high expectations to live up to, and I am extremely pleased to say that they did. I first tasted this wine at the Vintage Virginia wine festival and loved it so much I had to find it at a local shop. When you first open up this wine you’re immediately hit by some pretty fabulous aromas. The most prominent thing within the aroma was definitely this lovely floral smell that just jumps out at you. Besides this you get a pretty mellow smell of spice along with a fruit smell I can’t quite make out. Once you move onto your first sip you immediately notice how well balanced the wine is, with the alcohol not overbearing the fruit and vice versa. The spice carries over into the flavor very nicely, as you would expect from a good Sangiovese. That previously unidentified fruit smell also comes in a bit more pronounced leading me to believe that it might be plum (maybe). As for food pairings, this is a good light red so can go with pretty much any pasta you can come up with. I personally had it with a nice pepper and tomato pasta with some grilled chicken, the spice of the pepper really bringing out that same spice in the wine. This is definitely a great buy for any lover of red wine, and thanks to it being fairly light a lot of you white wine fans out there might also enjoy this. Mostly though if you enjoy a light Cabernet or Pinot Noir I think you should enjoy this wine, and for a price like that for a 7 year old wine why not give it a shot anyways.
